Dream Catcher Chalet at dusk

Local guide

The Gatlinburg guide.

Our favorite ways to spend a trip to the Smokies, from a six-bedroom base in Chalet Village.

Getting here

Gatlinburg sits at the north entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The closest airport is McGhee Tyson (TYS) in Knoxville, about an hour’s drive. Chalet Village climbs the ridge above downtown, so the last stretch is steep and winding.

In winter a 4WD or AWD vehicle is strongly recommended. The chalet has parking for up to 8 compact or 6 full-size vehicles.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The most visited national park in the country starts about fifteen minutes from the chalet. Start at Sugarlands Visitor Center, drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, or hike to Laurel Falls, Grotto Falls or Alum Cave. Clingmans Dome and Newfound Gap Road make an unforgettable half-day drive.

Parking in the park requires a parking tag, sold online and at visitor centers. Arrive early on weekends and in October, when the leaves turn.

Downtown Gatlinburg

The Parkway is ten minutes down the mountain: Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, the Gatlinburg SkyLift and SkyBridge, Anakeesta’s treetop village, Moonshine distilleries, pancake houses and fudge shops. Park once and walk; the trolley runs through town.

Ober Mountain

Gatlinburg’s own ski area is minutes from the chalet. In winter there is skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing; the rest of the year the aerial tramway, alpine slide and wildlife encounter are open.

Pigeon Forge & Dollywood

About twenty minutes away, Pigeon Forge has The Island, dinner shows, go-karts and outlet shopping. Dollywood and Dollywood’s Splash Country are roughly thirty minutes from the door, and the park’s seasonal festivals are worth planning a trip around.

Seasons in the Smokies

Spring brings wildflowers and waterfalls at full flow. Summer is peak family season with the community pool open across the street. October is the busiest month for fall color, so book early. Winter means quieter trails, Ober skiing, the Winter Magic lights, and the hot tub at its best.

Groups & celebrations

Dream Catcher Chalet was set up for groups of up to twelve: birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor and bachelorette weekends and family reunions. Grocery pre-stocking, private chefs, in-home massage, transportation and celebration setup can all be arranged before you arrive.
